How do I get to Donner Lake Inn from the San Francisco Bay Area?
Drive east on I-80 from the Bay Area for approximately 3 hours (around 180 miles depending on starting point). Take Exit 180 (Donner Lake) and follow signs down to the lake — the inn is about 2 minutes from the freeway exit. In good conditions San Francisco to the inn is roughly 3 hours; San Jose and Oakland are similar. Winter storms and weekend ski traffic can add 1-2 hours, so plan accordingly and check Caltrans QuickMap before you leave.
How do I get to Donner Lake Inn from Sacramento?
I-80 east from Sacramento is about 2 hours (around 100 miles) in good conditions. Same Exit 180 (Donner Lake) approach as Bay Area travelers.
How do I get to Donner Lake Inn from Reno or Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO)?
I-80 west from Reno is about 45 minutes (around 35 miles) in good conditions. For travelers flying into the Tahoe region, RNO is often a better fly-in than SFO or OAK — fewer flights but a much shorter drive to the inn. Rental cars are available at the airport.
Can I take Amtrak to Donner Lake Inn?
Yes. The Amtrak California Zephyr stops daily at the Truckee station in downtown Truckee, about 5 minutes by car from the inn. The Zephyr serves stations including Emeryville (Bay Area), Sacramento, and Reno. We can help arrange a ride from the Truckee station if you let us know your arrival time in advance.
Do I need a car once I arrive?
For most visits, yes — Truckee dining, ski resorts, and trailheads are mostly drive-distance. However, several things are walkable from the inn (West End Beach, The Pub at Donner Lake, Little Truckee Ice Creamery, Donner Lake Gift Shop), so guests who arrive by Amtrak and stay close to the lake can manage without a car for short stays.
Is there parking at the inn?
Yes. Free on-site parking is available for all guests, with spots in front of and behind the main house. Let us know in advance if you have an oversized vehicle, multiple cars, or need EV charging access.
What if I-80 chain controls or a closure catch me on the way up?
Check the live Donner Pass road conditions page before you leave and again at Colfax or Reno: it shows the current Caltrans status for I-80 over Donner Summit, the chain-control level (R1, R2 or R3), Caltrans cameras and NWS advisories. Carry chains that fit your tires from November through April even in a 4WD — under R2 an AWD on all-season tires must chain up, and under R3 everyone does. If you reach the Donner Lake exit (Exit 180) without chains, the Donner Lake Gift Shop at 15688 Donner Pass Road, a few doors from the inn, sells and installs them in winter. Put chains on only where you can pull fully off the roadway, and if Caltrans closes the pass, wait it out rather than trying Donner Pass Road (Old Highway 40), which is closed to through traffic in the same storms.
How early can I check in?
Standard check-in is 4 PM. Rooms are sometimes ready earlier — feel free to text us on arrival day. Many guests are able to drop off bags or do an early check-in from around 1-2 PM if the room is ready.
