What to Know

  • Sugar Bowl Resort — 4 miles, ~10 min via Old Highway 40 (10 miles, ~20 min via I-80). One of the oldest resorts in California with excellent terrain variety and Sierra-deep snow.
  • Donner Ski Ranch — 4 miles, ~10 min via Old Highway 40 (10 miles, ~20 min via I-80). Family-owned classic on Donner Summit; some of the most affordable lift tickets in Tahoe, especially for kids.
  • Boreal Mountain — 6 miles, ~10 min via I-80. Beginner-friendly with a strong terrain park; typically among the first to open and last to close each season, with night skiing on a published schedule.
  • Soda Springs — 7–9 miles, ~15 min via Old Highway 40 or I-80. Family-focused resort with the "Planet Kids" tubing and snow-play area; ideal for first-time skiers and young children.
  • Northstar California — 14 miles, ~20 min via I-80 and Highway 267. Groomed cruisers and a vibrant village with dining and shopping.
  • Palisades Tahoe — 16 miles, ~20 min via I-80 and Highway 89. Largest resort in the area; site of the 1960 Winter Olympics.
  • Tahoe Donner Cross Country — ~6 miles, ~12 min. One of the top-rated Nordic ski areas in North America, with ~100km of groomed trails in the Tahoe Donner community.
  • Royal Gorge Cross Country — 10 miles, ~15 min. The largest cross-country ski resort in North America, with eight distinct trail systems on Donner Summit. Owned and operated by Sugar Bowl.

The Truckee-Tahoe area is one of the premier ski destinations in North America, receiving an average of 400+ inches of snow per year at higher elevations. Donner Lake Inn places guests within a short drive of six separate ski areas, making it a practical base for ski trips of any style.

The Donner Summit cluster — Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch, Boreal, and Soda Springs — is all within 10 to 15 minutes of the inn in normal conditions (Sugar Bowl and Donner Ski Ranch are about 10 minutes up Old Highway 40, or about 20 via I-80 when Old 40 is closed). These resorts span a wide range of price points and personalities: Sugar Bowl for terrain and tradition, Donner Ski Ranch for value and a no-frills family vibe, Boreal for park skiing and beginners, and Soda Springs for the youngest skiers and tubing. Northstar (~20 min) and Palisades Tahoe (~20 min) are short drives further out for guests who want the bigger-mountain experience. Drive times are for normal conditions; under chain control they run longer.

If Sugar Bowl is the plan, the real lodging question is slopeside or below the pass: staying near Sugar Bowl at Donner Lake compares the resort’s Village Lodge with a room at the inn, decision by decision.

Looking for somewhere to sleep rather than somewhere to ski? See hotels near Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch and Boreal for the lodging side of the same map — drive times from the inn to each resort, and what is actually up on the summit versus down at the lake.

Cross-country and Nordic skiing

The Truckee area is one of the strongest cross-country (Nordic) ski destinations in North America. Two major XC areas are within easy reach of the inn:

  • Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Area — About 6 miles (~12 min) from the inn, in the Tahoe Donner community north of Truckee. ~100 kilometers of groomed track across diverse terrain; consistently ranked among the top Nordic areas in the country.
  • Royal Gorge Cross Country Resort — About 10 miles (~15 min) up Donner Summit. The largest cross-country ski resort in North America, with eight separate trail systems. Owned and operated by Sugar Bowl.

For backcountry and ski touring, the Pacific Crest Trail corridor along Donner Summit offers extensive ungroomed terrain.

For road conditions and chain requirements on the way to resorts, check our live Donner Pass road conditions page (Caltrans I-80 status, chain controls and cameras), Caltrans QuickMap, or call 511 before heading out. The Donner Lake Gift Shop (right in the inn’s neighborhood) sells and installs tire chains in winter.
