The Donner Summit cluster — Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch, Boreal, and Soda Springs — is all within ~15 minutes of the inn. These resorts span a wide range of price points and personalities: Sugar Bowl for terrain and tradition, Donner Ski Ranch for value and a no-frills family vibe, Boreal for park skiing and beginners, and Soda Springs for the youngest skiers and tubing. Northstar (~20 min) and Palisades Tahoe (~45 min) are short drives further out for guests who want the bigger-mountain experience.
Cross-country and Nordic skiing
The Truckee area is one of the strongest cross-country (Nordic) ski destinations in North America. Two major XC areas are within easy reach of the inn:
- Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Area — About 6 miles (~12 min) from the inn, in the Tahoe Donner community north of Truckee. ~100 kilometers of groomed track across diverse terrain; consistently ranked among the top Nordic areas in the country.
- Royal Gorge Cross Country Resort — About 10 miles (~15 min) up Donner Summit. The largest cross-country ski resort in North America, with eight separate trail systems. Owned and operated by Sugar Bowl.
For backcountry and ski touring, the Pacific Crest Trail corridor along Donner Summit offers extensive ungroomed terrain.
