Donner Lake hotels and lodging: the short, honest list.
One thing surprises most first-time visitors: there's very little lodging on Donner Lake. No chain hotels, no big resorts — the shoreline is mostly private homes. The real list is a five-room boutique inn (that's us), a condo resort, a historic eight-room lodge, a pool of vacation rentals, and a state-park campground.
Here's how they actually compare, including when we'd send you to one of the others.
What hotels and lodging are available at Donner Lake?
- For a hotel or inn → Donner Lake Inn — the lake's only boutique hotel and bed & breakfast: hot breakfast, a creekside hot tub, free EV charging, and a short walk to the water.
- For a condo with a kitchen → Donner Lake Village — a 66-unit condominium resort on the lake; studios to two-bedroom townhomes suit groups and longer self-catered stays.
- For a rustic lakefront lodge → Loch Leven Lodge — a small, historic eight-room lodge built in 1952, right on the water.
- For a private home or cabin → vacation rentals — the largest share of lodging here; best for bigger groups and longer stays.
- For camping → Donner Memorial State Park — tent and RV sites at the east end, typically late May through mid-September.
- If the lake is full → Truckee and Donner Summit — boutique, chain, and ski lodging ten to fifteen minutes away.

The lake's only inn with breakfast.
Donner Lake Inn is a five-room boutique hotel and bed & breakfast at the west end of the lake, a short walk up Gregory Creek from the shoreline — West End Beach is about four minutes on foot. Every room has a private exterior entrance, a gas fireplace, an en-suite shower, and a mini-fridge and microwave; the stay includes hot breakfast, the creekside hot tub, free EV charging, and 500+ Mbps fiber WiFi.
Rooms are built for families — each sleeps four or five with a queen and twin-XL bunks — and the whole inn can be taken as a five-room buyout. It is pet-free, has no restaurant beyond breakfast, and sits near the shore rather than on it.
Where we send guests when we're full.
Five rooms means we book out on peak weekends. These are the honest alternatives — each better than us at one specific thing.
Donner Lake Village
A year-round, roughly 66-unit all-condominium resort on the west shore (15695 Donner Pass Road). Units run from guest rooms with a queen and sofa bed up through studios with kitchenettes, one-bedroom suites, and two-bedroom townhomes. The property has a private beach, a seasonal dock and marina with rentals, a sauna, and a ski shuttle and waxing room. Better than us at: your own kitchen, and stays measured in weeks. donnerlakevillage.com
Loch Leven Lodge
A small, characterful eight-room lakefront lodge (13855 Donner Pass Road) where every room faces the water. Built in 1952 by a Scottish immigrant, Virgil Goodpasture, who named it after Loch Leven in Scotland for the brown trout he recognized in the lake, and run by the same family since 1974. The draw is a 5,000-square-foot redwood deck with a lakefront hot tub, swim and fishing docks, and a BBQ area; rooms have kitchenettes and gas fireplaces. Better than us at: waking up directly on the shore. lochlevenlodge.com
Vacation rentals
The largest share of lodging at Donner Lake: lakefront and neighborhood homes and cabins on the usual platforms. Often the right call for a large group or an extended family stay where you want a full kitchen, multiple bedrooms, and privacy. The trade-offs are the familiar ones — variable quality, cleaning fees, no front desk. Better than us at: groups larger than five rooms. (See also our inn vs. vacation rental guide, or Kinpine House, our seven-bedroom Tahoe home that sleeps 19.)
Camping at Donner Lake
Donner Memorial State Park has tent and RV sites (no hookups) along with lake access, the Pioneer Monument, and the Emigrant Trail Museum. Usually open from around Memorial Day to mid-September, bookable through ReserveCalifornia. Better than us at: budget, and sleeping outdoors in warm weather.
Hotels near Donner Lake: Truckee and Donner Summit
If the handful of lake properties are full — they often are in peak ski and summer weeks — the nearest alternatives are minutes away. Downtown Truckee, about ten minutes east, has boutique and standard hotels alongside its restaurants and shops. Up on Donner Summit there is additional lodging near Sugar Bowl and the smaller ski resorts, and Donner Pass hotels covers what actually exists up on the summit. Both keep you within easy reach of the lake while widening the room count.
Is there a motel at Donner Lake?
There isn't a classic motel on the lake — but if what you actually want is the good part of a motel (park at your door, no lobby, no hallways), that's exactly how the inn is built. Every room has its own exterior entrance with your car a few steps away. The difference: breakfast is included, and there's a hot tub under the pines instead of a vending machine. For an actual chain motel, the nearest cluster is in Truckee, about ten minutes east.
“Parking was right outside the room which was great.”
