Day parking: navigate to Sugar Bowl’s Main Lodge on Sugar Bowl Road. The lots are free and first come, first served, with carpool spots for four or more on weekends and a three-minute gear drop at the roundabout. The parking guide has the season’s details.

Family-owned and famously affordable, at the top of the pass on Old Highway 40 — which pairs naturally with rooms that sleep four or five for one rate. A family of four fits a Deluxe Suite; five needs the one Superior Suite, which goes first on holiday weekends.
Not Tahoe Donner. That’s a separate small hill north of Truckee, the other direction from the inn. Navigate to the Ranch by its Norden address, not by the name.

The resort you can see from the freeway on the way up: the most beginner-friendly hill on the summit, the area’s strongest terrain park, and typically among the first Tahoe-area resorts to open each fall. - First chair
- Breakfast is on at 7:30. On busy weekends the parking lots, not the lifts, set the schedule, so be driving by about 8.
- Storm days
- The summit resorts open lifts as wind and avalanche work allow. A late-opening morning is a good one for a slow breakfast or Soda Springs tubing.
- Chain control
- Carry traction devices and follow posted controls. If control is in effect, chains are sold and installed next door at the Donner Lake Gift Shop.
- Gear
