Hotels near each Donner Summit ski resort.

Hotels near Sugar Bowl Ski Resort

Sugar Bowl Resort is about 8 miles from the inn, roughly 15 minutes via I-80 (exit 174) or over Donner Pass Road. It is one of the oldest resorts in California, with terrain running from gentle beginner pitches to expert chutes, and its Judah base is usually the first to spin on storm days. Donner Lake Inn is the closest boutique lodging near Sugar Bowl Ski Resort — eight miles down the hill, with breakfast from 7:30 so you can be on a lift by about 8:30.

Hotels near Donner Ski Ranch

Donner Ski Ranch sits on Donner Summit Road, also about 8 miles and 15 minutes from the inn — the shortest hop of the six. It is family-owned and famously affordable, which pairs naturally with our family suites that sleep four or five. Of the places nearby with private rooms, private bathrooms, and breakfast included, the inn is the closest to the Ranch.

Hotels near Boreal Mountain

Boreal Mountain Resort is about 10 miles from the inn, roughly 15 minutes up I-80 — the resort you can see from the freeway on the way up. It is the most beginner-friendly hill on the summit, has the area’s strongest terrain park, and is usually first to open and last to close each season. Places to stay near Boreal ski resort are mostly down the hill at Donner Lake and in Truckee; from the inn it is about a quarter hour, and with night skiing until 8 PM most of the winter the drive back to the hot tub is an easy one.

Hotels near Soda Springs

Soda Springs Mountain Resort is about 10 miles and 15 minutes from the inn, just past Boreal on the same stretch of I-80. Its Planet Kids tubing and snow-play area is the best thing in the region for very young children and first-timers. The short drive matters here: a worn-out four-year-old is back at the inn fifteen minutes after you clip out.

Hotels near Northstar California

Northstar is about 10 miles east of the inn, roughly 20 minutes via Highway 267 through Truckee. It is the full-village resort of the group — long groomed cruisers, an ice rink, and shops and restaurants at the base. Staying at Donner Lake puts you 20 minutes from Northstar and 15 from the Donner Summit resorts, so one basecamp covers both sides of the trip.

Hotels near Palisades Tahoe

Palisades Tahoe is about 35 miles from the inn, roughly 45 minutes down Highway 89 through Olympic Valley. It is the largest resort in the region and the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. It is the longest drive we would suggest as a day trip from Donner Lake — comfortable for a day or two inside a longer stay, rather than every morning of it.

Hotels in Norden, CA

Norden is the small Donner Summit hamlet where Sugar Bowl and Donner Ski Ranch actually sit, at roughly 7,000 feet on old Highway 40 — and it has no conventional hotels. Lodging up on the summit is Sugar Bowl’s slopeside lodge, open in ski season and reached by the resort’s Village Gondola, and Clair Tappaan Lodge, the Sierra Club’s hostel-style lodge with bunk rooms, shared bathrooms, and meals included. If you want a private room with its own bathroom, breakfast, and a plowed road to your door, Donner Lake Inn is the closest option — about 15 minutes below the summit. The full picture is in our Donner Pass hotels guide.

Local tips from your hosts

The ski-day playbook.

  • First chair: breakfast at 7:30, on the lift by 8:30. On busy weekends, be driving by 8:00 to beat the parking lines.
  • Storm days: Sugar Bowl's Judah base usually opens first — start there and move up the mountain as it opens.
  • Chain control: we're below the summit on a plowed road; if I-80 control kicks in, chains are sold and installed next door at the Donner Lake Gift Shop.
  • Night skiing: Boreal runs lifts until 8 PM most of the season — a good half-day option the day you arrive.
  • Gear: free ski and board storage at the inn, and your car is parked right outside your room door.

After the mountain

Après, the quiet way.

The hot tub sits beside Gregory Creek under the pines — the most-mentioned thing in our reviews, usually in the same sentence as “after a day of skiing.” Every room has a gas fireplace stove for drying gear and warming up, and Truckee's restaurants are ten minutes away.

“We loved the hot tub by the creek after a day of skiing.”

Is the inn the right ski base for you?

Best for skiers who…

  • Are doing a one- to three-night ski weekend
  • Want breakfast included for early starts
  • Like a hot tub at the end of the day without resort spa prices
