The inn sits at the west end of Donner Lake, just below the pass, with the Donner Summit resorts up the hill one way and Northstar the other way through Truckee. No slopeside pricing, no parking-garage shuffle.

Distances and times are to each resort’s own address in normal conditions; under chain control or in a storm they run longer, and Old Highway 40 over the pass closes in some storms, which is why the I-80 route is listed too. Sugar Bowl lodging: stay slopeside or at Donner Lake?
Sugar Bowl Resort is about 4 miles from the inn up Old Highway 40, roughly 10 minutes in normal conditions; when Old 40 is closed, the I-80 route via exit 174 is about 10 miles and 20 minutes. It is one of the oldest resorts in California, with terrain running from gentle beginner pitches to expert chutes, and it has the one genuinely slopeside hotel on Donner Summit.
So the question for a Sugar Bowl trip is not which hotel is nearest. It is whether you want to sleep on the mountain or just below it, and that depends on the trip.
Do I want slopeside lodging?
Yes. The Village Lodge is a 27-room hotel in Sugar Bowl’s car-free village, steps from the lifts and open in ski season. If the whole trip is Sugar Bowl and waking up on the snow is the point, it is the better choice.
No. The inn is 10 to 20 minutes below the summit depending on the route and conditions. You drive up each morning and park in the resort’s lots like a day visitor.
Am I skiing more than one resort?
It is built around one mountain. Reaching Donner Ski Ranch, Boreal, or Soda Springs means riding the gondola down to your car first.
The inn is a base for the whole Donner Summit cluster: Sugar Bowl one day, Donner Ski Ranch or Boreal the next, Soda Springs tubing with the kids, all 10 to 15 minutes; Northstar and Palisades about 20.
What are the arrival logistics?
Park in the resort’s covered garage at the base and ride the Village Gondola in with your bags. No cars in the village, which is part of the charm.
Drive to your own door. Your keypad code is texted the day you arrive, so a late Friday arrival is fine at any hour, and the car is parked a few steps from the room.
What does my family actually need?

Lodging near Donner Ski Ranch for a family ski weekend

Donner Ski Ranch is at 19320 Donner Pass Road in Norden, on Old Highway 40 at the top of Donner Pass, about 4 miles and 10 minutes from the inn when Old 40 is open. It is family-owned and famously affordable, which pairs naturally with rooms that sleep four or five for one rate.
One thing to get right when you plan: Donner Ski Ranch is not Tahoe Donner. Tahoe Donner Downhill is a separate small ski hill in the Tahoe Donner subdivision north of Truckee, in the other direction from the inn. Navigate to the Ranch by its Norden address, not by the name.
- The route: in normal conditions, Donner Pass Road west from the inn straight up Old Highway 40 to the top of the pass; the Ranch is on the left just before Sugar Bowl Road. If Old Highway 40 is closed, check whether the I-80 route (exit 174, Soda Springs / Norden, then east on Donner Pass Road) is open before rerouting. I-80 can also have chain controls or closures.
- Timing: the Ranch publishes lift hours of 9 AM to 4 PM; check its site for the current schedule. Breakfast at the inn is set out at 7:30, so a family can eat, load the car, and be parked before the lifts turn.
- Which room: a family of four fits a Deluxe Suite (queen bed plus a Twin XL bunk; four of the five rooms). A family of five needs the one Superior Suite, with a triple bunk, which goes first on holiday weekends.
- Parking: at the inn your car is a few steps from the room door, so gear can live in the car or in the free ski storage overnight. At the Ranch you park in the resort’s lot at the base.
- Coming back: the hot tub beside the creek, a gas stove in the room to dry gloves and boots, and Truckee’s restaurants about ten minutes away.
Stay near Boreal Mountain for day and night skiing
Arrive late, ski tomorrow, soak after.
Boreal Mountain Resort is about 6 miles from the inn, roughly 10 minutes up I-80 (exit 176) in normal conditions: the resort you can see from the freeway on the way up. It is the most beginner-friendly hill on the summit, has the area’s strongest terrain park, and is typically among the first Tahoe-area resorts to open each fall.
Boreal runs night skiing on a schedule it publishes each season, and its operating days change through the winter, so check Boreal’s hours page before you plan an evening session. Places to stay near Boreal are mostly down the hill at Donner Lake and in Truckee; from the inn the drive back to the hot tub is about ten minutes.
- Late arrival: check-in is self-service. The day you arrive we text your room number and a keypad door code, so you can pull in at any hour and go straight to your room. Let us know if you expect to arrive after 10 PM.
- Early bag drop: check-in is 4 PM, but rooms are often ready earlier. Text us on arrival day; when the room is ready, many guests drop bags or check in from around 1 to 2 PM.
- Where gear goes: free ski and snowboard storage on the property. Tell us when you arrive (or ahead of time for a group) and we’ll show you where, so skis never come into the room. Boots and gloves dry by the gas stove.
- After skiing: the creekside hot tub, then dinner in Truckee about ten minutes away, or a half-mile walk to the pub at the lake.
- The morning: breakfast from 7:30 to 9 in the main-house foyer, your car right outside the door, and Boreal’s lot about 10 minutes up the freeway.

Hotels near Soda Springs
Soda Springs Mountain Resort is about 7 miles up Old Highway 40 or 9 miles via I-80, roughly 15 minutes either way in normal conditions, just past Boreal at the Soda Springs exit. Its Planet Kids tubing and snow-play area is the best thing in the region for very young children and first-timers. The short drive matters here: a worn-out four-year-old is back at the inn about a quarter hour after you clip out.
Hotels near Northstar California
Northstar is about 14 miles east of the inn, roughly 20 minutes via I-80 and Highway 267 through Truckee. It is the full-village resort of the group: long groomed cruisers, an ice rink, and shops and restaurants at the base. Staying at Donner Lake puts you about 20 minutes from Northstar and 10 to 15 from the Donner Summit resorts, so one basecamp covers both sides of the trip.

Palisades Tahoe is about 16 miles from the inn, roughly 20 minutes in normal conditions: I-80 east to Truckee, then Highway 89 south to Olympic Valley. It is the largest resort in the region and the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics. Highway 89 carries the Tahoe City traffic too, so on a powder Saturday plan for longer than the map says.

- Storm days: the summit resorts open lifts as wind and avalanche work allow, and it changes hour to hour. Check each resort’s lift status and the road before you pick the mountain; a late-opening morning is a good one for a slow breakfast or Soda Springs tubing.
