What to Know

If you drive an EV to the Sierra, the practical question is not whether Truckee has charging — it does — but which hotels let you plug in where you sleep, so you wake up with a full battery for the drive up the pass or around the lake. That list is short. Most Truckee and Donner Lake lodging has no on-site charger at all; a few hotels do, and they differ in connector type, who can use them, and cost. Here is how the real options break down.

What hotels in Truckee have EV charging?

Only a few Truckee-area hotels have on-site EV charging, and they suit different trips:

Each option is detailed below.

Donner Lake Inn

Donner Lake Inn is a five-room boutique hotel and bed & breakfast at the west end of Donner Lake, just off I-80’s Donner Lake Road exit (Exit 180). Its on-site charger is a single Level 2 unit at 40 amps — roughly 25–30 miles of range per hour for most EVs, which is a full battery over a normal overnight. It is free for registered guests, with no valet step and no resort fee: you park beside the inn and plug in. The connector is NACS (the Tesla connector, now the industry standard), so Teslas and newer NACS-native EVs plug in directly, and a J1772 adapter is kept on site for older non-Tesla EVs. It’s a single shared unit on a first-come basis, so it’s best for guests staying overnight rather than a quick mid-day top-off; on busy ski weekends the inn helps coordinate charger time between EV guests. Location is the real draw for EV drivers: at the west end of the lake it’s the natural overnight stop for charging before the climb to Sugar Bowl, Donner Ski Ranch, Boreal, and Soda Springs (all about 15 minutes up the hill) or before continuing over the summit. The stay also includes a hot breakfast, an outdoor creekside hot tub, and fast fiber WiFi.

Gravity Haus Truckee-Tahoe

Gravity Haus Truckee-Tahoe (10918 Brockway Road, on the south side of Truckee) is a roughly 40-room mountain hotel with on-site charging for guests — reported as two ClipperCreek J1772 units plus a Tesla Destination charger. It’s the larger-property option, with an on-site restaurant, a bar, a sauna and hot tub, a fitness center, and a co-working space, which makes it a good fit if you want hotel amenities and dining without leaving the building. It sits closer to the Highway 267 side of town than to Donner Lake. Charger availability is shared among guests, as at any hotel; confirm current units and any terms with the property when you book.

The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe

The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe (13031 Ritz Carlton Highlands Ct) is a five-star resort at Northstar Highlands, up the Northstar access road southeast of central Truckee. It has Tesla Destination chargers (Level 2, four ports) available to guests around the clock, accessed through valet rather than self-park. It’s the luxury-resort choice — ski-in/ski-out at Northstar, a spa, and fine dining — at a resort price tier, and the charging is a convenience layered onto that stay rather than the reason to book. Plan on the valet-mediated access and the drive up from the valley floor.

DC fast charging vs. hotel charging

Every hotel charger in the Truckee area is Level 2 — designed for overnight charging while you sleep, adding tens of miles per hour rather than a fast fill. If you need to charge quickly mid-trip, use the Tesla Superchargers in Truckee (and other DC fast chargers in town) instead, and treat the hotel charger as the overnight top-off. For most Sierra trips the two work together: fast-charge on the way in if you arrive low, then plug in overnight at the hotel so you leave full.
