Donner Lake Beaches & Swimming — West End, China Cove, East End & Public Access

Donner Lake has two public swim beaches — West End Beach on the west shore, which is the lifeguarded one, and China Cove Beach inside Donner Memorial State Park on the east. Beyond those, public access is real but different in kind: 37 public piers line the north shore, and Shoreline Park adds picnic tables and a fishing pier. Much of the remaining shoreline is private, so knowing which is which saves a wasted drive.

Donner Lake beaches, one by one

West End Beach

West End Beach sits at the west end of the lake and is the one most people mean by “the beach at Donner Lake.” It is run by the Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District: a sandy, shallow-entry beach with a roped-off swim area, American Red Cross certified lifeguards through the summer, a snack stand, playground, volleyball, and kayak, paddleboard, and paddleboat rentals on site. Shoreline Park

Shoreline Park is a small public park about midway along the north shore, also run by the park district. It is not a swim beach in the West End sense — there is no lifeguard and no roped area — but it is free, ungated, and open year-round, with picnic tables, a BBQ area, restrooms, an all-access fishing pier built for visitors of all physical abilities, and a hand launch for kayaks, paddleboards, and windsurfers. Parking is limited, so it fills early on hot weekends.

China Cove Beach (Donner Memorial State Park)

China Cove is the state park’s beach, on the southeast shore, and it is the lake’s second public swim beach. It is quieter and more wooded than West End, with picnic tables, restrooms open Memorial Day through Labor Day, fishing, and the lakeside interpretive trail running along the water. Day use runs sunrise to sunset and parking is charged per vehicle — $10 from May 1 through September 30, $5 the rest of the year. There is no lifeguard at China Cove, which matters if you are bringing young or weak swimmers.

East End Beach and the state park day-use area

There is no separate facility officially named “East End Beach” — when people search for one, they almost always mean the beach and day-use area at the east end of the lake inside Donner Memorial State Park, which is China Cove and the shoreline either side of it. The same per-vehicle day-use fee and sunrise-to-sunset hours apply. Boat and paddle rentals operate from this end of the lake as well, at Donner Lake Watersports on Donner Pass Road inside the park.

Donner Lake public piers

The most underused public access on the lake: 37 public piers along the north shore, strung out beside Donner Pass Road and maintained by the park district. They are free and first-come — no reservations — and locals use them for swimming, sunbathing, and picnics. Parking is roadside, so pull completely off the road and out of the bike lane, and note that overnight parking is prohibited and strictly enforced between 10 PM and 6 AM in many stretches. There are no restrooms at the piers themselves; the nearest are at Shoreline Park and the public boat launch.

Private HOA and homeowner beaches

Not all of the shoreline is open to visitors, and it is worth saying plainly. Two of the best-looking beaches on the lake are association amenities you cannot buy your way into for the day.

The gated sandy beach at the west end belongs to the Donner Lake Property Owners Association — open to property owners inside its boundary, with boat storage, BBQ pits, and volleyball courts.

At the east end, the Tahoe Donner Beach Club Marina on Donner Pass Road is the private beach and marina belonging to the Tahoe Donner association, whose subdivision is actually up the hill north of Truckee rather than on the lake. It has sandy beach, a boat launch, docks, kayak, SUP and pedal boat rentals, and a grill — all restricted to Tahoe Donner members and their personal guests, with a member ID or registered-guest check at the gate. It catches a lot of visitors out, because it looks from the road like a public marina.

Beyond those, stretches of the south shore are fronted by private homes and private piers. If you are staying in a vacation rental, ask the owner whether the property carries association membership; if you are not sure, use West End Beach, China Cove, or the public piers, all of which are unambiguously open to everyone.

Swimming at Donner Lake

Can you swim in Donner Lake?

Yes, and it is one of the better swims in the Truckee area. Donner Lake is small and shallow enough — about three miles long and 238 feet at its deepest — that it warms up meaningfully over the summer, which is not true of Lake Tahoe next door. Donner Lake swim areas

The one supervised swim area on the lake is at West End Beach, where the swim zone is roped off and lifeguards are on duty during summer hours; swimming outside those hours is at your own risk. China Cove has a beach and calm water but no lifeguard. The public piers are the informal option — deeper water off the pier ends, no supervision, and no shallow entry, so they suit confident swimmers rather than small children. Mornings are the calm window on Donner Lake; afternoon wind picks up reliably from the west.

Dog-friendly beaches at Donner Lake

Neither swim beach allows dogs. West End Beach prohibits them along with glass and smoking, and Donner Memorial State Park keeps them off China Cove Beach, the Nature Trail, and out of the visitor center. What does work: leashed dogs are allowed on the park’s Lakeside Interpretive Trail, the Zig Zag Trail, the fire roads, and along the lake shore outside China Cove — a shoreline walk with water access, which is what most people are after. One honest note, since this is a lodging site: Donner Lake Inn is pet-free, so we are not the place to stay if you are travelling with a dog.

Staying near the beaches

Donner Lake Inn sits at the west end of the lake, about a four-minute walk from West End Beach — close enough that beach days do not involve moving the car or hunting for parking twice a day. China Cove and the state park are a five-minute drive around the lake, and the public piers start just up the road. The inn is a five-room bed & breakfast; every room sleeps four or five with a queen and twin-XL bunks, which is why summer here skews toward families doing exactly this. Breakfast is included, and the creekside hot tub is a decent answer to a long day in cold water.
