Donner Lake Marina — Boat, Kayak & Paddleboard Rentals

Donner Lake Marina is the lake’s rental operation and the easiest way to get on the water from the inn. It runs two locations — the marina at the west end of the lake near Donner Lake Village, and Donner Lake Watersports at the east end on Donner Pass Road inside Donner Memorial State Park — and between them rents both motorboats and paddle craft. If you just want a boat for the afternoon, start there; if you are trailering your own, the public ramp and the inspection sticker below are what you need.

Boat rentals at Donner Lake

Donner Lake Marina rents powerboats for water skiing and wakeboarding, pontoon boats for slower group days on the water, and aluminum fishing boats. Rentals go out from both the west-end marina and the east-end Watersports location, and the fleet is small enough that summer weekends want a reservation rather than a walk-up. Donner Lake is only about three miles long and holds a 5 mph limit within 200 feet of shore, so it fishes and cruises better than it runs long — most renters take a half day rather than a full one.

Kayak & paddleboard rentals at Donner Lake

Single and tandem kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards rent from both marina locations. There is a second option worth knowing: West End Beach rents kayaks, paddleboards, and paddleboats straight off the sand during summer, roughly 9 AM to 4 PM and weather permitting, which is simpler if you are already there for the day. Life jackets rent for a few dollars. Morning is the paddle window — Donner Lake is glassy early and picks up a dependable west wind by afternoon.

Donner Lake public boat ramp

The public boat ramp is at 10981 Truckee Way, operated by the Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District and staffed May through September. It sells day passes and season passes, priced separately for California residents and for out-of-state or commercial boats, and there is a fish cleaning station on site. The ramp is unstaffed rather than closed in the off season, but water levels can drop too far to launch safely in winter. The district publishes a hard end date each fall — boats have to be out of the water before it.

Before your first launch of the season, every motorized and trailered watercraft needs a Town of Truckee self-inspection form and inspection sticker. The inspection is free and separate from the launch fee, and a current Lake Tahoe sticker can carry over if the boat has not been in other water since. This is an invasive-species program and it is enforced at the ramp, so do it before you hitch up.

Public docks at Donner Lake

There are 37 public piers along the north shore of Donner Lake, maintained by the park district and strung out along Donner Pass Road. They are free and first-come, with no reservations, and they are the usual spot for hand-launching a paddleboard or kayak, swimming, and fishing. Parking is roadside — get completely off the road and out of the bike lane — and overnight parking is prohibited and enforced between 10 PM and 6 AM along much of it. Shoreline Park on the north shore adds a hand launch for small craft and windsurfers, plus restrooms and an all-access fishing pier.
