West End Beach, Donner Lake — Hours, Parking, Tickets & What to Expect

West End Beach is Donner Lake’s lifeguarded public swim beach — a 12-acre day-use park on the west shore run by the Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District, and a four-minute walk from Donner Lake Inn. It is the beach with the roped swim area, the snack stand, and the rentals, which is why it is the one most visitors end up at.

Hours, admission, and parking

Gates are open 8 AM to 8 PM. A seasonal admission fee applies, sold as daily admission or a season pass through the park district; rates change year to year, so check the district’s current pricing before you go. Staffed services — the entry booth, snack stand, and rentals — run through the summer season. Parking is on site, and the lot turns over steadily but does fill on hot July and August weekends; arriving before 11 AM or after 3 PM is the difference between parking and circling. Walking in from the neighborhood, as our guests do, sidesteps the question entirely.

Swimming and lifeguards

The swim area is roped off and supervised by American Red Cross certified lifeguards during summer hours. Outside those hours, swimming is at your own risk. Entry is sandy and shallow, which is the reason this is the beach families pick — small children can wade a long way out before it gets deep.

Rentals and on-site amenities

Single and double kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and paddleboats rent off the beach, typically 9 AM to 4 PM and weather permitting; life jackets rent for a small all-day fee. Seasonal storage for your own kayak or small boat runs roughly May through late September. On land there is a playground, volleyball courts, picnic sites (some reservable), BBQ access, a snack stand, restrooms, and a pavilion that can be rented for events with reserved parking. Rules worth knowing before you arrive

No dogs, no glass, no smoking. The dog rule is the one that catches visitors out — it is absolute at West End Beach, not a leash requirement.
