A summer family itinerary built around Donner Lake Inn — close enough to West End Beach to walk, with enough rainy-day backup activities to handle whatever the Sierra weather delivers.
Friday — arrival and settle in
- Self-check-in with your keypad door code, any time Friday. The Deluxe Suite or Superior Suite is set up for families — Queen for parents, Twin XL bunks for kids.
- Walk to West End Beach (~4 min) for an evening at the lake. Sunset over Donner Summit is consistently spectacular.
- Dinner at The Pub at Donner Lake (half-mile walk) or grab takeout and eat on the back patio of the inn.
- Hot tub for parents while kids decompress in the room. Outdoor creekside, in the pines.
Saturday — lake day
- Breakfast 7:30-9 AM. Burritos are the kid favorite; overnight oats and fruit for parents.
- Donner Lake Marina (a short walk or 5-min drive): rent kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, or pedalboats. Mornings are calmest on the lake.
- Lunch break — pack a picnic from the Donner Lake Gift Shop (snacks, drinks, ice) or head into Truckee.
- Afternoon swim at West End Beach (lifeguards on duty, sandy entry, picnic tables).
- Treat stop: Little Truckee Ice Creamery, voted best ice cream in Truckee/Tahoe since 2018.
- Dinner downtown Truckee (~5 min). Lots of family-friendly options on the historic Donner Pass Road strip.
- Hot tub for everyone before bed.
Sunday — history and home
- Breakfast until 9 AM.
- Donner Memorial State Park (~7 min east end of the lake): Pioneer Monument, Emigrant Trail Museum, lakeside walking trails. Excellent for school-age kids learning about Sierra Nevada history. (Details)
- Alternative: The Donner Summit railroad tunnels — kids can walk through the original 1860s transcontinental railroad tunnels (bring a flashlight).
- Checkout 10 AM. Drive home via I-80, or take Old Highway 40 over Donner Pass for the scenic route.
Logistics
- Weather. Sierra summer is generally clear and dry, but thunderstorms are possible in afternoons. Pack layers.
- Kids and lake safety. West End Beach has lifeguards in peak summer hours but supervise young children. Donner Lake water is cold even in August (high alpine elevation).
- Pet-free property. The inn does not allow pets — helpful for kids with allergies.
